Paintings by Richard Brashear and

Richard Brashear
Richard's early life was as an Iowa farmer's son in Ames, Iowa where his mother was a
professor at Iowa State College. He began painting in oils at age eight with the help and attention
of his mother's artist friends. His professional career has varied many times.  After four years in
the US Navy, Richard settled in California where he was a Design Engineer with General Motors &
others. Then, because of his avocation involvement in motor sports (racing his Ferraris) he was
for five years Technical Editor for a national automotive magazine. His love of
automobiles has always been a part of his life and so has his love of boats and the sea.

He spent a period as a paid captain and has sailed from Glacier Bay, Alaska to Panama
and from Panama to Chattanooga, Tennessee (via the Mississippi & TVA). Richard, wife Karen
and son Mike moved from the west coast to North Carolina in 1987. Settling in Oriental, Karen
became Town Manager and Richard started the custom home design business that he still
pursues. In 1996 the Brashear family moved to Goldsboro where Karen is the Public Utilities
Director for the city. It was at this occasion when time for his art became available and
Richard began painting again.

Having a great admiration for the disappearing craftsmanship that is evident in the
historic architecture of Goldsboro, many of his paintings are of the landmark buildings in
the area. Also a love of the old rural life and of nature is a reoccuring theme for his work
as is the theme of the sea and boats. Most of his art is available as geclee reproductions
on stretched canvas. Nearly indistinguishable from original work, the geclee process
allows many people to own and display his work in their home at an affordable price.
